Jasleen Goel M.D. A pediatrician by training and a passionate wellness advocate by interest.
Pediatrics has been a wonderful convergence of my love of children and my passion for prevention and wellness. My professional journey started in New Delhi, India, where national resources were limited, thus prevention was the best way to use those resources. There and then, the biggest threat to children's health and survival was infectious disease. Now three decades later, and thousands of miles away from my starting point, I find that whereas we have won many a battle against infectious disease (with much help from public sanitation, immunization and antibiotics), we are facing new and different set of challenges.
I have worked and trained in several different countries spanning three continents with different philosophies towards healthcare. I salute modern cutting edge medicine which has made amazing advances, and which, with the aid of drugs and devices, has given a chance at life to those with serious and life threatening conditions. However, not everybody is in need of intervention, which, when overused or inappropriately used makes our healthcare spending in USA far exceed that of any other country, without a measurable benefit to us.
Cutting edge science also includes the study of epigenetics which provides new understanding about causation. Interestingly, this research is showing us that many of the new chronic health challenges facing us today are the product of our modern lifestyles, social experiences and environmental exposures. Research has also demonstrated that preventive lifestyle strategies and exposure management can reverse this trend. It is my mission to raise awareness, and through education, provide the tools for you to take charge of your own health.
So wait, what has a pediatrician got to do with wellness and prevention for grown ups? I'm glad you asked - because I have been wanting to answer this and that too with a vehement "everything!". A pediatrician's training is heavily geared toward prevention and education and now increasingly as we learn of the "Developmental Origin of Adult Disease", it is almost literally "everything" as I just said. DOAD is just another way of saying that the foundation for a healthy adulthood is laid in early life and we know that healthy lifestyles are established in childhood. Besides, many of us forgot to grow up anyway. However, all is not lost if you are amongst those that did grow up (congratulations!) yet didn't embrace a healthy lifestyle then (you are in good company by the way), for every breath is a new chance at living life right!!
I started Greenique as a wellness consultation and education service as I realized that all paths to wellness started with lifestyle change and that all the healthiest lifestyles came back to the same thing - living in a holistically aware, green and sustainable manner. Whether it was the planet's health, or ours, both were interconnected - inseparable actually, and benefited from the same lifestyle change. Yet I realized that one size does not fit all, everybody is unique - so it meant each going healthy and green in their unique manner - thus was born Greenique Wellness.
